WW1

Find a picture of Archduke Franz Ferdinand - 
copy and paste it and list 5 facts about him under the picture you’ve chosen. 
He began his military career aged just 12 
 He came from an old European family. 
 He did not get along with his uncle. 
 He wanted to restructure the empire 
 He was assassinated by a terrorist. 
 Write 5 facts from your reading under the following headings: 
 P3 - The Schlieffen Plan 
Germany had been preparing for war for years in 1905

The Trenches 
 It is estimated that there were about 2,490 kilometre of trench lines dug during World War I. 
 between 1-2 metres wide and 3 metres deep. Trenches weren't dug in straight lines. 
 trench warfare is resorted to when the superior firepower of the defense compels the opposing forces to “dig in” 
 During WWI, trenches were used to try to protect soldiers from poison gas, giving them more time to put on gas masks. 
 Trench warfare of the First World War can be said to have begun in September 1914 P17 - 
 Poison Gas Poison gas was a new weapon
 Poison gas was used in january 1915. 
 Windy weather could also be a problem. 
 The earliest gas masks were made from a pad of cotton soaked in water or soda.
    There were the first basic gas masks issued to british soldiers in 1915

  1. Wow! You've found heaps of information about wartime. The use of poison gas was very disturbing. Interesting to see the British were first to get gas masks. Imagine having to dig all those trenches!
