This influx of settlers hoping to make their fortune had a big impact on New Zealand's early economy. Where was it ?

The first recorded discovery of gold in New Zealand was by Charles Ring, a Tasmanian who found a small amount at Driving Creek near the town of Coromandel in 1852. Some years later there were more discoveries around Golden Bay and Marlborough, Otago and on the West Coast Why did they do it? During the gold rush period, the whole nation experienced great economic growth, as well as a rapidly increasing population. New towns appeared, new jobs were created, and the lives of most New Zealanders were impacted upon by the rushes.

  1. Very well-researched and answered Kisziah. I like your mention of Charles Ring who was the first to discover gold in the Coromandel. I can imagine what a crazy time it was for most people living in Aotearoa then. How was it for your whanau I wonder?
